How to set static IP address

no-111 au-05

Information

In order to control your Raspberry remotely by either VNC or SSH it’s a good practice to have always the same IP address. Usually when you reboot it, the IP address will change when it’s set to auto. Here is how to make it static.

Step 1

Please note that Raspberry Pi OS is changing constantly and by the time you are reading this instruction your menu could be visually different. Don’t worry the functionality is pretty much the same.

Right click on your wifi/ethernet icon at the top right of your screen and select Wireless and Wired Network settings.

  1. The wifi settings icon
  2. The wireless & wired network settings option

Step 2

A new window should pop up.
Now set the interface to be wlan0.

  1. The interface option
  2. Wlan or ethernet settings. In this case choose wlan0

Step 3

Now configure your static IP address.
The most important thing here is your router’s address. You might want to ask your system administrator what’s your router’s address and enter it here.

If your router’s address is something like 192.168.100.1 you must set your Raspberry Pi to use the same mask e.g 192.168.100.xxx like the screenshot below.

  1. The interface option
  2. Wlan or ethernet settings. In this case choose wlan0
