What is FTP?

What is FTP

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It means that you can transfer files between computers. FTP needs two ports (one for sending and one for receiving) because it was originally designed to operate on Network Control Program (NCP), which was a simplex protocol that utilized two port addresses, establishing two connections, for two-way communications. An FTP client provides more freedom compared to the command line and web browser. It is also easier to manage and more powerful compared to the other methods.

Data Types

There are four data types, while transferring data over network.

  1. ASCII used for text
  2. Image: The sending computer sends each file byte to byte.
  3. EBCDIC: Used for plain text

Local: It was designed to support file transfer between machines which do not use 8-bit bytes
